Tricky Words and what they really mean
Artisians / Craftsmen - people in society who were skilled in an applied art, making the specialised items no-one else did, usually by hanf using traditional methods
Buddhism - a religion that has a varity of beliefs, practices and traditions based largely on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama (the historical Buddha)
Bushido - a Japanese warrior code of conduct
Daimyo - Feudal Japanese lords, roughly equivalent to medieval European dukes or earles. They were powerful warlords who controlled an area of Japan, serving the shogun.
Emperor - the male monarch or supreme ruler of an empire.
Feudalism - a form of government based on the exchange of land for military service, with a strict hierarchy of status: also a system under which peasents were granted use of farming land and, in return, were obliged to provide services and loyalty to the lord of the manor. The feudal system represented everyone's place in society, whether low or high.
Merchants - people who buy and sell merchandise for profit.
Peasants - people who are small farmers or farm laborers who produced everyone's food. They were of low social ranking and were taxed harshly.
Ronin - a masterless or lordless samurai, especially one whose feudal lord had been deprived of his territory.
Samurai - the hereditary warrior class of Japan, who swore to serve and fight for their daimyo.
